Understanding Your Options
An overview of implant types, shapes, and surface technologies to help you feel informed ahead of your consultation.
INTRO
Breast implant selection is a personalised process. Modern implant systems offer a variety of sizes, shapes, and surface technologies designed to support different anatomical needs and aesthetic goals. Your surgeon will guide you in choosing the most appropriate option for your body.
Implant Types & Gel Technologies
Breast implants are typically filled with medical-grade silicone gel designed to maintain shape while providing a natural feel.
Different gel cohesivity levels are available:
- Softer gels for a more natural movement
- More cohesive gels for enhanced shape retention
Some implants are also designed to be lighter in weight, such as those in the B-Lite range. These reduce overall implant mass while maintaining volume, which may be a consideration in selected patients.
Implant Size & Proportion
Implant size is selected based on:
- Chest width and breast base diameter
- Existing breast tissue
- Skin elasticity
- Desired outcome
Rather than focusing only on volume, surgeons aim to achieve proportion and balance in relation to your body.
Shape & Projection
Implants are available in different shapes and projection levels:
Round Implants
- Even fullness throughout
- May create more upper fullness depending on placement
Anatomical (Teardrop) Implants
- Designed to follow a more natural breast contour
- Fuller in the lower portion with a gradual upper slope
Projection / Profile
Projection refers to how far the implant extends from the chest wall:
- Lower projection → wider, softer appearance
- Higher projection → more forward fullness
The Polytech portfolio includes a wide range of shapes and projection options, allowing for tailored planning based on individual anatomy.
Surface & Texture Technologies
The outer surface of an implant influences how it interacts with surrounding tissue.
Smooth Surface
- Allows freer movement within the implant pocket
- Commonly used with round implants
Microtextured / Textured Surfaces
- Designed to support tissue interaction
- May assist with implant stability in certain cases
- Often used with anatomical implants
Polyurethane-Coated Surface (Microthane®)
Some implants in the Polytech range are available with a polyurethane foam coating, known as Microthane®.
- This surface forms a three-dimensional structure around the implant
- Designed to support tissue integration during the healing process
- May contribute to implant stability in certain clinical situations
Different manufacturers apply different surface technologies.
The Polytech range includes advanced microtextured surfaces developed to support tissue compatibility and consistent performance.
Your Next Step
